The Police and the Black Country

by Mick Pearson

Introduction

In the 21st century we take the police force as being an essential (though not always welcome) part of society. This has not always been the case. These articles will trace the history and development of British Policing from the early days of the parish constable, through the formative years of borough policing, past the amalgamations of small forces such as the Dudley Borough Police, into the current set-up where West Midlands Police is responsible for policing the whole of the Black Country.

As a serving Police officer with West Midlands I suppose some of my writing will be biased. I have almost 25 years experience, and have worked in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Dudley during my time. I have seen many changes from the police force I joined in 1980, some good, some not so good. I hope you will enjoy this work, if you have any material or comment you would like to make please feel free to email me, my email address is at the foot of each page.
