Book
Launch - "Cricket Lyrics" - Thomas Disney - 23
June 2011
The Black Country Society has just published
"Cricket Lyrics", which is a collection of poems
originally written before the First World War by Halesowen
Grammar School headmaster Thomas Disney.
The poems are quite delightful. Some compare life with the
development of an innings; others praise his wife for allowing
him to play the game he loves and in others he laments his
inability in old age to match the next generation of cricketers.
Guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye of even the hardest
cricketer.
The poems are accompanied by a range of articles analysing
Disney’s achievement as a headmaster, his links with
local author Francis Brett Young, a critical analysis of
the poems and an examination of the careers of two of the
schools most famous cricketers Eric Hollies and Charles
Palmer.
The book will be launched by Baroness Rachael Heyhoe Flint
on Thursday 23 June at Halesowen Cricket club at 2pm. Refreshments
will be available an hour before.
People who are interested in attending should contact Judith
Watkin Secretary of the Black Country Society on [email protected].
