THE BLACK
COUNTRY GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY's predecessors go back to 1842
and the first was called The Dudley and Midland Gelogical
Society. It ended and was followed in 1880's by the Dudley
and Midlands Geological and Scientific Society and Field
Club. This lasted until 1912.
In 1956 the world's first geological reserve was created
at the Wrens Nest, Dudley.
In 1975 the present B.C.G.S.came into existence, and is
still thriving. As the wealth of the Black Country was based
upon the geology of the underlying ground in the form of
the minerals found in abundance, we feel that our society
is very important in the development of this region, and
the more people know about this the better. |

has a Thursday and Friday slot. Features include interviews

Relay Wireless |
From the 1930s to the
early 70's there was what seems an almost forgotten method
of broadcasting that of relay wireless (seems a strange name
for something that was anything but wire-less, but that's
what it was called). In Brierley Hill this was provided by
"British Relay Wireless" (later to become "British
Relay" when they also relayed TV.) All council houses
and schools were wired up with a 4 station audio system and
subscribers had a station selector and a speaker. Another

This
website is just about to have it's 4th year since it's conception
back in 2001. The society was formed in 1959 by individuals
who were concerned about the future of the canal, convinced
that it needed a body to protect and promote its use. At the
time the canal was under threat of closure, and ensuring its
future became the first task of the newly formed society.
Apart from the notable undertakings,
the society is constantly involved with developments along
the canal and is regularly involved on planning proposals
and projects by other bodies.
The society also holds monthly
meetings attended by guest speakers, runs many events throughout
the year an produces a monthly magazine called "Broadsheet"
