The Women Chainmakers Festival took place on
22nd October 2005, attracting good numbers of visitors to the
Museum to see and hear the various Festival Events. Before the
recreation of the 1910 strike procession led by "Mary Macarthur",
who was the motivating force behind the nationwide campaign to
abolish sweated labour, Sylvia Heal, MP for Halesowen and Rowley
Regis, spoke of the significance of this date in 1910 when the
women's victory led to the establishment of Britain's National
Minimum Wage Movement. Other speakers included Megg Munn, MP and
Minister for Women, Frances O'Grady, TUC deputy General Secretary,
and Diane Holland, TGWU's National Organiser for Women. All speakers
referred to the fight that women have had to obtain equality and
recognition in the labour market. In addition they spoke of the
Workers' Institute, which had stood in Cradley Heath as a landmark
to British labour history, and the rescue programme to preserve
the building and relocate it on the Museum site.
Chris and Al the licensees of "The
Goldmine" public house (formerly The Blue Ball ) in Peartree
Lane, Cradley Heath have sent me 3 modern photos of the pub. If
anyone has any old pictures either of the pub or the area around
it, they would be very grateful for copies, or the original, so
they could frame them & put them in the bars. Links to the
