Black Country Society History Day and 102.5FM The 'Bridge

Michael Hall

On Saturday 18th October 2008 the Black Country Society, in partnership with the University of Birmingham once more held its annual Black Country History Day at the University. As on previous occasions the event, the third thus far, featured Guest Speakers from across a broad range of disciplines, all with a local flavour. Taking the floor this year were:

Graham Fisher MBE ('More Miles than Venice' - the canals of Birmingham and the Black Country)
Sally Hoban (Arts and Crafts and the Pre-Raphaelites)
Keith Hodgkins (Civic Architecture of the Black Country)
Dr. Michael Hall (Francis Brett Young)

Following the event Guest Speaker Graham Fisher, who is also a broadcaster on 102.5 FM The 'Bridge, subsequently invited the three other speakers to be guests on his regular afternoon show Graham Fisher in conversation with ... to chat about their respective specialities and their experiences of the hugely successful History Day.

Graham has subsequently drawn all three of these three fascinating interviews together and they are now available to listen to again, free of charge, here on the Black Country Society website.

Michael gave an in-depth insight into the life and writing of Francis Brett-Young as well as details of the FBY Society. The society's website can be found at www.fbysociety.co.uk

Sally Hoban

Sally talked to Graham about the likes of William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. She also revealed her research for a PhD and made a request for anyone who has knowledge of the Camm Studio in Smethwick, demolished in the 1980s. Anyone with any information on Camm, please visit Sally's website at www.sallyhoban.com.
