The contents of this issue include articles on entertaining the public: straight acting and the variety theatre, presenting zoo animals and about a novelist; Black Country industry; 2 huge firms and a one-man business; and reminiscences. In a delightful, hilarious piece David Barlow gives some advice (negative) on acquiring a dog, John Sparry identifies "The Cracker Hole" and there are the regular features; something for everybody, I hope.
One of the most important events in the Black Country this year has been the opening of the 21 million Walsall Art Gallery. There have been sour comments by some writers in London newspapers: "What have Walsall residents done to deserve this?" criticism of the building, its location, the quality of some of the exhibits and even their labelling - so it must be good. Well done, Walsall!
I came across a most useful book recently, "Companion the the Industrial Revolution" by Clifford Lines with a Foreword by Asa Briggs and Barrie Trinder as Consulting Editor. It is one of a series of books on many subjects published by Facts on File Ltd. This title has over 1000 entries and provides an A to Z coverage of one of history's most dynamic and transitional periods. It was however, a disappointment to read the first 5 words of the 'Black Country' entry: "The region centred on Birmingham ...". Clearly, he Black Country Society still has work to do.
