The Annual General Meeting on 24th March last recorded the Black Country Society's strongest ever position: membership, groups, activities, publications and publicity, in it's 32 years existence. We have a strong team to lead us into the Millenium. Brief biographies of the new President and new Chairman will be found on page 9.
This issue's Black Country personality is a Netherton born man with an amazing record of public service whose father was the subject of an article in the Spring magazine. Edith Tranter tells of her first job in 1926 as a domestic servant ("in service") describing a workload, which would appall present day young job seekers, but Edith, now 87 years old, was positive about her experiences, "I picked up quite a few useful tips which I found helpful in later life".
Peter Barnsley's article on James Whale, Dudley born Hollywood film director, includes previously unpublished material and a critical comment on the film 'Gods and Monsters' in which Sir Ian McKellern stars as James Whale. Consideration should now be given to the placing of a blue commemorative plaque at a Kates Hill location near to his birthplace.
With another dozen or so articles ranging from 'Medeival Taxation' and industrial history to a new gardening feature and the regular pages, I hope that all readers will find something of interest.
