Season: Autumn 1998
Vol: 31
No. 4
Year: 1998

Editorial:
In this issue two important series are concluded: Peter J English's 'Braithwaite and Kirk' and Chalres Elwell's 'The Sanitary Movement in the Black Country'. We have been privileged to have a preview of Peter's on location researches into the tremendous contribution made by Black Country firms to the Raj. His work on the famous West Bromwich company is to be published by Sandwell Community Library Services.

Our Black Country personality, No 41 in the series, Professor John Woodhouse has had a remarkable academic career for which the foundations were laid in Quarry Bank. He is now a Society Life Member and has readily agreed to do a bit of work for us in the Autumn. On Friday 13th November at 7pm at Mount Pleasant Primary School, Quarry Bank he will launch Ned Williams's forthcoming book Quarry Bank in Old Photographs, accrued from his adult class at that school.

CJN Fletcher has contributed an interesting article about living in the former Oldbury Vicarage as a boy after the Second World War when his father was Vicar of Oldbury. The inhabitants thought that there might be ghosts there and the writer wonders if the spirits were laid to rest when the building was demolished and 13 houses built on the site or whether they still emerge in a sad and fruitless search for their familiar haunting grounds.

This issue marks the start of my 11th year as Editor. Although I have the final responsibility for what is included in the magazine its production is a great team effort. Over the past 10 years there have been over 120 new contributors, there is always a team of willing helpers available to pack 2000 magazines for posting and hand delivery and to deliver another 1000 to some 40 sales outlets. Reliance Printers of Halesowen, printers of all 124 magazines over the past 31 years go to endless trouble to convert my 'mock-ups' into an acceptable magazine. Many thanks to all who help, including our advertisers.

1998 has probably been the busiest ever for the Black Country Society. On pages 5-7 will be found details of Autumn activities, the Local History Fair and book launches. We hope to see many members at these events.
