Season: Winter 1998
Vol: 32
No. 1
Year: 1998

Editorial:
This 125th issue of The Blackcountrymanmarks the start of the 32nd year of its existence making it the oldest regular publication incorporating the term The Black Country in the title.

In December 1995 Local History Magazine published its findings of a survey of local history publications and The Blackcountryman was listed amongst the best with the comment:

".... absolutely crammed full of everything and anything about its area of interest and can leave its readers feeling as if they have feasted on a past made real by the Editor's unstinting enthusiasm for his locality."

In the last magazine it was reported that the Society had had a very busy 1998. There has been no respite since September with the Family and Local History fair, four book launches, the new session's programmes at six venues - the October meetings attracted over 300 members - and several 'Millenium Spectaculars' under consideration.

I am grateful to our contributors who keep me supplied with sufficient articles for the contents page to list a wide range of subjects.

If you are still looking for a Christmas present and cannot think what, do search these pages for details of several Black Country presents on offer: a membership subscription (recipient will also receive an extra free gift), 1999 'Arrowsmith' calendar, one of the recently published 'old photographs' books, or one of those reviewed. Time will be getting short by the time you receive this magazine but every effort will be made to send orders by return of post and thus in time for Christmas.

On behalf of the Committee I would like to wish all readers a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Stan Hill
